It is almost Father’s Day in Australia – the first Sunday in September. Not sure what to do, or stuck for a gift idea?
Here are some ideas to inspire you – and family budget friendly!
Go on a picnic. Grab a blanket or picnic chairs, a BBQ chicken and bread rolls from the supermarket, and head off to your favourite park. Laze about for as long as the kids will let you and enjoy some fresh air.
Bake a Father’s Day cake. My husband and boys made me one for Mother’s Day and I loved it!

If the kids are old enough, get them to write Dad a story, with all of you as characters in it. Make it as simple or creative as you like!
Play a game together of his favourite sport.
Take a photo of everyone pulling silly faces and frame it for him.
Buy him his favourite movie on DVD and include a bag of popcorn or other movie snacks with it.
Plan a project to do with him – build or make something together.
Make home made pizzas and everyone can do their own toppings.
Go for a bike ride.
Paint him a moustache mug to use for his morning coffee or to use at work. Fill it with his favourite chocolates or a bag of freshly ground coffee beans.

What plans do you have for this Father’s Day?
Make sure you’re following Life, kids and a glass of red on Facebook for extra giggles and snippets of silliness!
We’re not doing anything huge here for Fathers Day as bub is still only 2. I’ve got a few personalised gifts and I usually give him a dad themed book with a letter ‘from her’ written inside the cover.

Some cute ideas here 🙂 My girls love buying something from the school’s Father’s Day stall! We’ll most likely head out for a family lunch, of even a picnic somewhere if the weather is nice.

I love the Father’s Day stall at school too and love the logic that goes in to their choice. Our eldest bought egg cups with bow ties last year because he knows Dad likes eggs on toast for breakfast. Thought that was just lovely 🙂

I love picnics but with a nearly 2-year-old, she lets us relax for all of 30 seconds! I like parks with wide open spaces so we can let her roam a little before we need to chase her down. Father’s Day will be pretty special in our house…after all, he is her favourite! 😦

I hear you! Our toddler needs wide open spaces for roaming too 🙂

Cakes are so easy – and if the kids are old enough, decorating is as simple as chucking some smarties or M&Ms on top! Nothing fancy required 🙂

We don’t like to spend money on Father’s Day or Mother’s Day as I don’t believe that is what it is about so your ideas are great

I think its more about the gesture and thought that counts 🙂

Oh so many cute ideas there and I love that they dont involve spending much money as I hate the way consumerism has made it all about spending big bucks for fancy gifts xx

Thanks Sonia – I think it is more important to put the thought into something nice, rather than spending money 🙂

Oh I love the idea of kids writing dad a story! I’m remember that for a few years time when my child knows more words than mum, dad, bub and hi… that’d make a dull story. I think we might go on a picnic though, great idea for a baby friendly activity 🙂

Although I think if my seven year old decided to write Dad a story, it will probably be the storyline from one of the Star Wars movies, starring him, his brother and Dad as characters!

Great ideas – I like that they can be personalised to suit each family. I have shared some home-made gift ideas including some I (on my son’s behalf) made last year. This year, Daddy gets to stay at home with his son, while I have a Mother/Daughter date 🙂
